Navigation – Header & Footer

important information that lives on every page

Header and Footer Areas

There are two elements that will always be present on every page, known as the Header and the Footer. Header and Footer areas should be the same across all pages of your site. Both contain relevant information about your site, such as your main navigation menu, privacy, accessibility, social media links, address, etc.

Main Menu

The main menu appears in the header on every page and is key to a smooth user experience. It helps visitors find what they need, navigate your site confidently, and understand your content hierarchy.

Menu Guidelines

  • Include your most important pages.
  • Aim for 5–8 top-level links.
  • Use only one tier of dropdowns for major categories (two levels total: category > subcategory).

If You Have Many Pages

  • Consider a mega menu. This is a larger, expanded menu that displays multiple options at once, often organized into clear sections.
